Catherine is a freelance food and travel writer and a regular contributor to Savour Calgary and Taste & Travel International magazines.

Cursed with an academic mind and a romantic soul, Catherine learned early that travel sated the needs of both.  From her first exchange to the high Arctic at the age of 12, travel became the persistent thread tangling through her life, pulling her to postings in Indonesia and New York State, and on journeys to almost 40 countries on six continents.

So, too, did an interest in how food fuels the body lead to exploration of how it likewise nourishes the spirit.  Carbo-loading and electrolyte replacement gave way to other discoveries:  the cultural significance of turmeric rice cones; the textural surprises of Modernist cuisine; the pure pleasure of a fresh burrata cheese.

From 1999 to 2004, Catherine was based in Jakarta, where she became a staunch fan of Southeast-Asian cuisine and co-editor/co-publisher of The Tapestry, a glossy English-language magazine for the Canadian expat community.  A fascination for Indonesian culture led her to the Indonesian Heritage Society, with whom she introduced newcomers to Jakarta’s cultural touchpoints, joined study tours to neighbouring islands, and delved deep into Indonesian history and literature.

After years of post-secondary teaching, Catherine left the front of the classroom to study travel writing at Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary, and creative writing under the mentorship of novelist Rosemary Nixon.  She continues her professional development as a member of the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society.

Catherine’s food and travel writing has appeared in a variety of print publications, including The Philadelphia Inquirer, WestJet Magazine, City Palate, Savour Calgary, and Food and Travel (UK edition).  She has been a regular contributor to Taste & Travel International magazine since 2014.

When she is not running half-marathons in the American South, prowling the hills of Italy and the museums of Paris, or savouring traditional Marron cooking in the rainforests of Suriname, Catherine lives and writes in Calgary, Canada.
